Saint Michael School kindergarten and third grade students visit the Gathering Place monthly to share projects and read.  The inter-generational program is led by teachers Betty Leno and Patti Cheslawski, as well as Gathering Place staff.  “The children have developed a bond with our Gathering Place buddies,” said Kindergarten teacher Betty Leno.  “I know it means a lot to the people using the Gathering Place program to see the children.  The program has helped our students to have a better understanding of the elderly.  It is another example of what our school is about, building friendships that cross all age groups.”

News from Sixth Grade…
Nancy Sprague’s sixth grade class is finalizing plans for the annual trip to Ellis Island. This is the 7th year that Mrs. Sprague has been taking a class to view the Statue of Liberty. The children will be leaving by coach on Friday, June 6.
As part of the trip, students have been fundraising throughout the year. They have held weekly bake sales, sold bulbs and herbs and sponsored a “Dress Down Day” for the school.
“This is really an intergenerational trip,” said Nancy. “Many parents and grandparents will join the class. What is truly amazing is how the class works together to raise funds to cover the expenses for all those attending.”
In order to prepare, the class has been reading and sharing books about immigration. Their studies have covered immigration through all borders of the United Sates. Students have also conducted research to determine from what country their own families immigrated.
According to Nancy, “They are really looking forward to going to the museums with all of their friends, seeing the Statue of Liberty, actually being on the islands, buying souvenirs and just seeing the sights.”

News from the Middle School…
The eighth grade will be hosting an “Evening of Robert Frost” on Thursday, May 29. Students will present a selection of Frost’s poetry and the event is free and open to the public.
Tom Costello has worked with the class throughout the year to achieve a better understanding of poetry. The program on May 29 is a culmination of the class’ study of Frost.
The evening will begin with dessert and coffee at 6:45 p.m., followed by the poetry readings at 7:00 p.m. Tim O’Connor will talk about what it was like for him to hear Robert Frost at Kennedy’s inauguration on January 20, 1961. The program will be held in Rand Hall at Saint Michael School.

News from Fifth Grade…

Mrs. Lori Tustin began her maternity leave on Friday, May 9. She and her family are now awaiting the birth of little “Christopher.” During her leave, Cary Winther will be the substitute. Join us in wishing Lori well during this blessed event.

News from Second Grade…

Congratulations to the second graders on receiving their First Communion. The middle school hosted a First Communion tea last Monday for the children and their families.

News from First Grade…

The class is still enjoying the program “Around the World in 80 Days.” People from different countries visit the classroom to share photos, food, traditions, and dress of their country of origin. Students then complete their individualized passports with information about each country. Every two months, the children correspond with their Irish pen pals from Leixlip.
